Preparing for Trial- A Checklist for Determining Average Travel Costs

  • Determine when the visitation is likely to occur.
      • If you have an agreed upon timeshare, this will be easy. If you don’t have an agreed upon timeshare, then look at the following:
        • 3 Day Holidays (distance plays a factor in whether the Court will Order 3 day holidays to be shared)
        • Spring Break
        • Fall Break (this is not something usually adopted when child attend public school, but some charter schools exercise Fall Break)
        • Thanksgiving
        • Christmas
        • Summer Break
      • This may require pulling from the school’s website a calendar of summer, holidays, in service days, etc.
  • Using a travel browser such as Expedia, determine which airlines fly in and out of the designated locations. The airlines might change based upon the unaccompanied minor information set forth herein below.
  • Go to each airline and determine whether, based upon the child’s age, the child is considered an unaccompanied minor or not. If the child is considered an unaccompanied minor, determine the fees associated with the travel. If the child is not an unaccompanied minor, determine if the child is old enough to fly alone or if the child is too young to fly alone and a companion is necessary.
      • You should print the information for the carriers you may be proposing to use so you have it to attach to the compilation as describe herein.
  • Do research on at least three (3) different airlines for anticipated flights for the upcoming year using the times when visitation is likely to occur.
  • As you are conducting the research, print and save the information for the visitation periods as determined appropriately by showing the costs.
  • Combine the information from the different airline carriers to determine an average cost for flights over a twelve (12) month period, put together an Excel chart of the information and attach the backup documents from the carrier to support the compilation of information.
